The maths department is in the strong position of being fully staffed with maths specialists. As a department, we are committed to ensuring students have a deep understanding of numeracy and mathematical concepts, through the development of ‘mastery’. This ensures not only that students have the confidence to tackle increasing complex mathematical problems, but also the mental mathematics skills needed to serve them well in the world of work and at home too.

Key Stage 3

The maths course at Key Stage 3 builds on the mastery of key number and geometry concepts studied in primary school and provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to access the GCSE maths course in Key Stage 4. Year 7 and Year 8 students follow a mastery scheme of work in which teaching for understanding enables students to continue their learning in number and geometry and extend this further into algebra and statistics. The scheme of work promotes a depth and breadth of understanding around each theme to ensure a fluent foundation is built and students’ deep understanding enables them to apply their skills and communicate their knowledge across a range of contexts and problems.

Key Stage 4

The maths course at Key Stage 4 builds on the mastery of key mathematical concepts acquired at Key Stage 3. Year 9 students follow a mastery scheme of work in which teaching for understanding enables students to continue their learning in key number concepts of ratio and proportional reasoning and geometry. The GCSE course is then taught with the same principals of teaching for understanding in all strands of Number, Ratio and Proportion, Algebra, Shape and Space and Statistics. There is a high focus on problem solving, reasoning and communicating mathematics to ensure that students develop the skills they need to apply to the final examination questions.

Edexcel GCSE Mathematics (9-1) is assessed in the following way:

Edexcel GCSE Statistics (9-1 Examination June 2018):

The GCSE Statistics course at Key Stage 4 covers the whole range of statistical techniques for collecting, processing, representing and interpreting data from a variety of contexts and also in depth understanding of Probability. Teaching for understanding is promoted throughout to enable students to apply their learning to a range of problems in both familiar and non-routine contexts and to be able to model real life scenarios.

Edexcel GCSE Statistics is assessed in the following way:

Controlled Assessment (25%) Examination (75%)

AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics:

The AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths places an emphasis on higher order technical proficiency, rigorous argument and problem-solving skills.

It gives high achieving students an introduction to AS level topics that will help them to develop skills in Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, Matrices, Trigonometry, Functions and Graphs.

AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics is assessed in the following way:

Controlled Assessment (0%) Examination (100%)

This qualification is suitable for students who already have or are expected to get grades 8 and 9 in GCSE Mathematics and who are likely to progress to A-level study in Mathematics and possibly Further Mathematics. This qualification is delivered in an enrichment session to Year11 students.

Key Stage 5

Year 13 Only

OCR A Level Mathematics (7890)

Students have studied Core 1, Core 2 and Decision in year 12. They will study Core 3, Core 4 and Statistics or Mechanics in Year 13.

Year 12 Only

AQA A Level Mathematics (7357), QAN code: 603/1164/2

At Outwood Academy Easingwold, we study A-level Mathematics with AQA. This course will be externally examined at the end of Year 13. Some students may have the option to be externally examined in AS mathematics at the end of Year 12 also.

A-level Mathematics offers students with a good understanding of Maths the chance to study it at a higher level. It provides a thorough grounding in the mathematical tools and techniques often needed in the workplace. Techniques covered include algebra & proof, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, exponentials & logarithms, sequences & series and numerical methods which together form the fundamental building-blocks of the subject. We will also study some applied mathematics: statistics (sampling, regression, measures of central tendency & spread, probability distributions and hypothesis testing) and mechanics (vectors, constant acceleration formulae, Newton’s laws, projectile motion, friction and moments). Please note that both the pure & applied content is all standardised and no longer varies based upon exam board chosen.

Students will enjoy studying a course which will give them a strong foundation for study in other A-level subjects and many varied careers from Astronomer to Zoologist, Cryptologist to Cartographer, Statistician to Systems Engineer and Meteorologist to … Mathematician!

By the end of the course students will have:

  • an understanding of the mathematics that underpin many aspects of our lives;
  • the ability to apply a range of mathematical skills to different situations;
  • acute logical thinking and problem-solving abilities; and
  • the ability to process, interpret & analyse information.
